FOR SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS

We are within easy reach of 4 great ski areas which includes Obertauern one of the highest and snow sure resorts in Austria. Skiing can start as early as November and go right through to the end of April.

It is an easy drive to each resort, car parking is free and you can basically be on the slopes within a few steps of your car.

The Lungau ski pass covers 3 of the areas – Katschberg Aineck, Grosseck Speiereck and Fanningberg. All resorts have lots of long lovely slopes meaning less time on and off the lifts!

The Lungo ski pass covers the 3 areas above and Obertauern.

Children can ski from the age of 3 and there are kindergartens and other ski clubs available for children from 6 months old. Children under the age of 6 ski for free.

A bit about each of the areas -

Aineck / Katschberg (1044m to 2220m)

Runs – 10km blue, 49km red, 10km black

Our access to this ski area is via the Aineck Mountain with some great long runs, one of which ‘the A1’ goes from the very top to the bottom of the mountain. Skiing down over the other side of the Aineck brings you to the resort of Katschberg and another great ski area.

Grosseck Speiereck (1100m to 2400m)

Runs – 23km blue, 17km red, 7km black

There are very good facilities for young children close to the beginners slope at the base of the mountain. The main ski area is accessed via a gondola taking you up to a bowl of wonderful runs.

Fanningberg (1500m to 2100m)

Runs – 13km blue, 7km red, 10km black.

This is a great resort for all abilities and is particularly suitable for beginners, families and groups of mixed abilities; the beginner slopes being close to the main chair lift that accesses all other slopes. From the top of the main chair lift you can select blues, reds or blacks to ski down. Most of the runs are long, wide and tree lined and for the more adventurous there is a lot of safe off-piste available.

Obertauern (1630m – 2313m)

Runs – 61km blue, 35km red, 4km black

A very large commercialised resort providing a wide variety of slopes for all abilities but obviously a lot busier! It takes about 30 minutes to get to Obertauern.

All the areas have numerous mountain bars and restaurants to take a break in and enjoy a drink (hot chocolate, gluhwein, schnapps, beer, apple juice etc!) or some excellent food (cheese & ham toasties, goulash soup, schnitzel or sausage & chips, gröstel).

Early afternoon heralds the music from the bars at the bottom of the lifts and the start of the ‘après –ski’!

FOR CROSS COUNTRY SKIERS

Cross country skiing is available here in the Lungau too; 26 trails totalling about 200km in length. Around Lake Prebesee, a short distance from Lessach, there is a beautiful trail at high altitude ensuring good snow conditions. There is also a small trail up the Lessach valley starting just down the road from our Chalet, when the conditions are good.

FOR SKI TOURERS

Our village Lessach is the perfect base for some of the Lungau region’s most beautiful Ski Tours such as those up to the Gumma (2315m) a climb of 1100m and the famous Preber (2740m) a climb of 1500m (or 1200m if you drive up to the base). Numerous mountains in the area lend themselves to Ski Touring and there are 30 different routes available of varying ability and length.
